"Halloween is my favorite holiday. Mostly because you can be someone or something else for a night." I told my best friend Samantha.
"Well I like Halloween because you get free candy!" Samantha told me laughing. We were walking home from school on October 30th, the day before Halloween. I was walking home with my two best friends, Samantha and Wednesday.
"Well, as you know I don't go trick-or-treating." Wednesday announced.
"We know!" Samantha and I told her in unison.
"You've been telling us since the beginning of the year, when you moved here, that you have xenophobia."  I groaned. "Which means you have a morbid fear of strangers. Like we said 'we know'."
"I also have arachniphobia." Wednesday mumbled; I rolled my eyes.
"Well, Sammi what are you going to be?" I asked changing the subject.
"Well either a vampire or a movie star," Samantha replied. "What about you?"
"Well, I think I'm either going as a rockstar or a black cat."
"I wouldn't go trick-or-treating if I were you." Wednesday blurted.
"And why not?" I asked seriously.
"Tomorrow night is a full moon." Wednesday told us gravely.
"So?" I asked, "What's that got to do with anything?"
"Maybe you'll die if you go trick-or-treating." Samantha teased laughing, I started laughing too. Then Wednesday asked,
"Haven't you ever heard the legend that if you go trick-or-treating during a full moon you'll be killed?"
"Yeah." I told her seriously. "Just now!" Samantha and I started laughing and when we stopped we had tears in our eyes.
"Fine then! Don't believe me," Wednesday shouted running home, "But don't say I didn't warn you."
"Uh-oh...I hope we didn't hurt her feelings." I confessed to Samantha.
"She shouldn't have run off we were just joking," Samantha argued. She glanced at her watch, "Oh no! Oh man, if I don't get home right now I'll be in huge trouble! I'll see you later!" She was running home now and I started walking up my driveway; home.
                                                      ....................
"What are you supposed to be?" Samantha asked me as I met her in the cemetary. It was now Halloween night.
"A black cat, doofus!" I told her laughing.
     "Well, don't cats have tails?"
"Well...I don't, so there." We started laughing. "What about you?"
"I am a vampire," She hissed, "I vant to suck your blood." We started lauging again. We left the cemetary and started walking through town.
"Have you noticed anything odd?" I asked.
"You mean like how we're the only ones out?"
     "Yeah."
"Why do you think that is?"
"Maybe Wednesday was right...Maybe trick-or-treating during a full moon was a bad idea..." I mumbled.
"What are you talking about? That's just an urban legend. Nothing is going to happen." Samantha said sounding braver, then I'm sure she felt.
"Yeah you're probably right." I said, "Let's try this house."  We knocked on the door.
"Trick-or-treat!" We called and a woman answered the door.
"Well, a cat and a vampire?" She looked surprised to see anybody out. As we were walking away Samantha looked in her bag.
"She gave me a stapler?!" She exclaimed, "On Halloween she gave me a stapler?! No extra staples?! JUST A STUPID UGLY STAPLER?!" Obviously she was extremely upset. I mean who wouldn't be?
"Sammi, calm down Sammi. We'll get some candy. Just calm down."
"You're right...Let's...Let's just go to a different house." She replied softly. We walked all around town, but at every house we stopped at they were surprised to see trick-or-treaters.
"That was just an urban legend right?" I asked Samantha nervously.
"Yeah no way can you be killed on Halloween. Besides even if you could die, how would it happen, I mean if no one else is out anyway? What...is a falling leaf going to cut you up?" Samantha asked laughing nervously. We walked in silence all the way to the school.
"Ok. Let's go home now." I said.
"But...all I got was a stapler and some other office supplies..." Samantha complained.
"I don't care...look at it this way, at least you'll be ready for school." I said. "And I'll even buy you a bag of candy." To be honest I was totally and utterly terrifed. We were the only people out. No porch lights, or street lights were on, there were no flashlights bobbing up and down as people walked, and there was no sound. Not even the occasional dog barking. It was as if we were the only two people in existence, and it was only 8:00 at night. Suddenly the moon went behind a cloud and everything was pitch black.
"Did you hear that?" Samantha squeaked.
     "What? What did you hear?"
"Footsteps. Stop talking, don't move and listen." She whispered. She was right there were footsteps. They were getting closer and closer. The last thing I heard was Samantha's scream.
                                                  ....................
"Two girls were brutally murdered last night in front of the school. They both had multiple stab wounds. The police have no suspects at this time." The T.V. clicked off.
"Well, I warned them...too bad they didn't listen..." Wednesday sighed sadly, as she washed off a bloody knife in her kitchen sink.
I wrote this in 9th grade as a short Halloween story....I think I did pretty good if I do say so myself. ^ ^
